Making your summer count

So you’re planning a holiday for a bit of fun in the sun, and to recover from all those end of term exams and assessments. After that, what are your plans for the rest of the summer?

• More travelling?

• Working for cash or as a volunteer?

• Doing a summer internship?

• Something else …?

Whatever your plans, try to make the most of your experience and think about the skills you will be developing that will make you attractive to employers. Just to give an example - skills acquired through travelling could include: networking, negotiating, team working, problem solving and communication skills. These skills can all be used later as evidence in CVs and applications.

Work Experience Portfolio

When you’re off enjoying your vacation, the trick is to make sure you don’t forget what you’ve done! So why not keep a record by using our Work Experience Portfolio.

Skills for Work Certificate

Alternatively, if you want something a bit more structured, why not register for our Skills for Work Certificate. It is designed to help you record any skills gained from work experience and demonstrate them to future employers. However, if you’re interested, you need to make sure you register for this as soon as possible.

Sheffield Graduate Award

The Skills for Work Certificate also counts towards the Sheffield Graduate Award which recognises the personal growth, self improvement and life skills that make up the typical University of Sheffield graduate.

Right now, in the middle of your revision, you’re probably just looking forward to some time on the beach and then being able to watch daytime TV for the next few months. But if you make the effort this summer to get off the couch and do something, then you’ll be glad of it when the time comes for filling two sides of blank paper that are supposed to be your CV.

Good luck with the rest of your exams and enjoy the vacation!
