If you have arrived in Sheffield and are looking
for a part-time job, why not call in and
say hi to the team in the Student Jobshop - we’re next to New Leaf in the Students’
Union.
We advertise lots of part-time job
vacancies (and summer internships and placements) on myVacancies but we are always happy to see students and to explain our service
or to offer individual support. We are
open 10-3pm on Monday to Friday (11am start on Tuesdays) and you will find
friendly staff to answer any questions you may have.
Our team has recently been joined by two
new student assistants – Shuyang and Alex who bring a useful student insight to
our work. Both are postgraduate students
at the University and both are also skilled in languages, meaning that on some
days in the Jobshop we can offer help in Mandarin, Spanish, Russian or French –
but mostly we operate in English!
I read recently that September is the
least stressful month of the year, but we have been very busy with preparations for
our Part-time Jobs and Volunteering Fair which
takes place in the Octagon, right in the middle of the campus, on Thursday 2
October from 10.30-2.00pm. With more
than 80 organisations attending, including over 40 offering paid part-time
vacancies, the Fair is a great opportunity to meet a whole range of employers
face to face, to find out about the jobs they offer and to ask any questions
you may have. Preparation will pay off –
the Fair will be busy (over 3000 students are expected to attend) – so be sure
to check out the vacancies on myVacancies in advance and
bring a good supply of CVs, so you can use your time effectively when you
visit.
Need help with your CV? The
Jobshop and the Careers Service website can supply examples of CVs and covering
letters that you may find useful when you are writing your CV, and short CV
review appointments are available if you want a second opinion about what to
include or leave out
.
No work experience? – no problem, our Taste of Work scheme offers
short (3-4 hour) work tasters in departments throughout the University and
Students’ Union. Register and you could
gain a short taster experience in customer service, admin, hospitality, finance
and more. Registrations open now.
There are lots of Careers events and
sessions taking place over the next few weeks – too many to list here, but our What’s On Diary and your weekly
WoW emails will help you to keep track.
The Jobshop team are also hoping to run some online Q and A webchat
sessions – look out for details!
Our myVacancies service is a good place to start when you are looking for
work and new vacancies are added daily,
but competition can be fierce so be sure to extend your jobsearch and use
friends, course mates, contacts, social media etc to help you find your perfect
part-time job
We cannot promise you the moon – but we
can help you reach for the stars (vacancies for Astronomy presenters and TV
film extras both live on myVacancies now!)
Good luck for the first few weeks in
Sheffield – we look forward to meeting you
Gill
