Preparing for interviews and assessment centres

At this time of year a lot of students visit the Careers Service to ask for help with interviews and assessment centres. Being invited to an interview or an assessment centre by an organisation may seem daunting but it means you’ve been successful with your application so far. On paper you appear to have what they’re looking for and they would like to find out more about you. So far so good!

To help you to prepare, we are running two events next week:

Interview Workshop – Monday 28th March, 2:00pm – 4:00pm. Visit the What’s On Diary to find out more: http://tinyurl.com/5udjt8x

Assessment Centre Exercise – Wednesday 30th March, 1:30pm – 2:30pm. Find out more on our What’s On Diary: http://tinyurl.com/6ynlb86

We also have a lot of material in the Careers Service to help you prepare. Popular books include: Succeeding at interviews, Great answers to tough interview questions and How to succeed at assessment centres. You can find the full list of resources at:

http://www.careers.dept.shef.ac.uk/infotree/GettingAJob.php

If you haven’t had an interview before and need some practice with interview technique, you may want to try our Interviewer software; an interactive programme that allows you to work through a series of questions and record your responses via a webcam. To book a slot call us on 0114 222 0910.

We have facilities online for those of you who find it difficult to visit us at the Careers Service. Try our two online talks, Understanding interviews, part 1 and part 2 available at:

http://www.shef.ac.uk/careers/students/talks.html

And last but not least, there are a number of short dvds on Campus TV available via the University network. Four of them show students being interviewed by graduate recruiters and there’s one on assessment centres that will give you an idea of what to expect. Find them at:

Good luck!
